Gavin Chen is currently studying in the first year of the Pop Music Composition Department of Hsing Wu University of Science and Technology. At the age of two, he was diagnosed with moderate autism. Language expression and comprehension are met with extreme difficulty. Hence, all learning processes became all the more demanding. At a young age, Gavin has already exhibited extraordinary musical talent. At 5 years of age, when his mother began teaching him how to play the piano, Gavin’s perfect pitch was discovered. With continuous efforts, he has slowly made an impact in the musical scene.

Aside from being the champion for 4 consecutive times in the National Talent and Art Competition of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, Gavin has also started to compete in piano competitions with fellow students. He garnered first place in prestigious competitions like the 2019 International Classical And Traditional Music Awards, 2018 Taipei Culture Cup Piano Competition , 2017 Excellence Music Open Competition of Taiwan, the 2016 Asian Music Contest, International Music Competition in 2015, the 2015 Prague National Piano Competition. To top it all, he was also included in the 2017 Young Musician Excellence Award.

In order to overcome his difficulty in human interaction, Gavin’s mother encouraged him to join his school’s string orchestra. He became a violinist of the Ming Hu High School’s orchestra. Through his unwavering hardwork, Gavin is now able to independently join the orchestra for school competitions and also being the representative for inter-school competitions. In 2016, Gavin was sent by his school to compete in the National Student Competition of Music in which he won first place. This shows that through hard work, special kids can likewise achieve greater heights.

Gavin continuously breaks through the limitations brought about by his autism. His condition did not become a hindrance for him to engage in public welfare activities. His enthusiasm to share his talents led him to hold classes in teaching the ocarina to various people in different venues such as zoos and nursing homes. He actively participates in charity events. Aside from joining fundraising activities, he performed in Taipei 101 for the World Autism Day back in 2014. Gavin was invited to perform with Lee Sheng Jie. In 2015, he was invited to the Caring for Children with Autism Concert which was held in Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall. Aside from playing with the NSO Orchestra for a jazz trio, he also had the chance to perform with Shi Xiao Rong for a guitar performance. In 2017, he was invited again to perform in Taipei 101 for World Autism Day wherein he made everybody feel that despite having a disability, he is still able to freely express himself through music. Gavin was the representative of Taiwan for 2014-2017 in the Autistic Talent Gala (which was held in Hong Kong) where he won the Award for Excellence. He was invited to perform in places like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou in China.

In addition to his musical achievements, Gavin is also an outstanding swimmer. He was the youngest among those who participated in the 2016 Taipei City Swimming Competition for People with Disability. His excellent performance earned him a gold, three silvers, and one bronze medal. In the 100 meter backstroke race, not only Gavin break the national record, but he was also awarded the Fervent Global Love of Life Award.
